Prepare for Spring and Summer - paint your outdoor furniture!

Although the weather is still very chilly outside, it won’t be long before the Texas sun makes its way back into the metroplex. So, we like to get a head-start on Spring by preparing for it now!

It’s simple, easy and fun to paint your outdoor furniture and it can breath new life into any outdoor atmosphere you have set up. Transform your deck or yard with some of these quick outdoor furniture painting tips.

Assuming that you’ll be painting wooden outdoor furniture, first make sure that the wood is free of mildew or mold (check the underside too!) If there is some mold, use a cleaner with mildewcide. If it’s not too much mold, a good bleach and water should be able to do the trick.

The next step for preparing your outdoor furniture is to sand it. By roughening the surface, you’ll give the paint more opportunity to stick to the original grain which will leave a more high-quality finish.

If old paint or stain is left after a good sanding, you can skip priming. But if not, you should apply lighter primer that is formulated for outdoor use.

Then, it’s time to get after it! Choose a good stain or paint that will protect against UV rays and extreme weather (both hot and cold) and leave it to dry in a well-ventilated area.

A great way to prepare for Spring and Summer - start to spruce up your outdoor furniture with a new coat of paint. Then, move on to the house and call Village Professional Painters!

The quality of your paint DOES matter!

Hands down, choosing paint is the most critical part of any design or painting that you’ll be doing. There is nothing more important. Our trained professionals at Village Professional Painters only use the highest quality paint for your home, so if you choose to paint your home yourself, you should do the same.

First off, find a brand that you are comfortable with—something that is within your budget and in your desired shade. We recommend Benjamin Moore,Behr or Sherman Williams as some of the most reliable and impressive.

Finishes for your paint are equally important. Some finishes are more appropriate for kitchens, while others are better suited to walls with imperfections or wooden floors.

Another choice you’ll have to make: oil or latex (water-based) paint?

Oil based paints are smoother and are more thorough and thick, so it will take less coats to cover a wall. But they also take longer to dry, so you can only cover so much wall at one time. They have a strong odor that can be downright overwhelming and can also crack, fade and yellow over time.

Latex paints don’t yellow over time, are easier to clean, and dry much faster than their oil-based counterparts. They’re also more environmentally-friendly! One of the few catches of using latex paint is that it swells the grains of wood, making sanding a complete necessity for that finished and polished look.

What tips have you used when choosing paint? What’s important to you to check out before diving into a big painting project? Call Village Professional Painters and we can assist you in helping you choose the right paint for your home or office.

Painting over Wallpaper - do or don't?

Note from a customer:

A friend of mine recently bought a “fixer upper” home with dreadful wallpaper that lined the interior of his beautiful living room. If you’ve ever removed wallpaper, you’ll know it can be a major hassle. It can cause some damage to your walls with its adhesion and you risk chipping into your wall trying to get the stuff off! So the question is - how to paint over wallpaper? Can I paint over wallpaper?

Paint your wallpaper to keep intact the current condition of the wall and jump into your project sooner rather than later and after some major preparation work.

Follow these quick tips for painting over wallpaper and ensure that you, like my friend, will have an easier painting process and create the beautiful room of your dreams!

1. Minimize risk

Minimize the risk of damage to your walls by replacing any loose sections of wallpaper with adhesive to give you a smoother and more easier wall to work with. A little tape to hold any loose paper to the wall will do the trick.

Apply some clear caulk along the bottom and edges of the wall to prevent your wallpaper from creasing and peeling long after you’ve painted.

2. Take the right steps

Spackle walls to help smooth out the surface which will prevent the texture of the wall from showing through the paint that you’ve worked so hard on. A thin coat of joint compound is the easier way.

Some slight sanding along the wallpaper seams can be very helpful too.

3. Protect against moisture

The biggest problem with wallpaper is how it reacts to moisture, and that doesn’t go away after you’ve coated it with paint. Apply some oil-based primer to the walls before painting to seat the wallpaper and protect it against the moisture that’s inside the paint you’ll use.

Next step, get to work! It’s only a matter of time until you can enjoy a room you’ll love.
Or, forget all that and call Village Professional Painters, we will take care of that nasty wallpaper and provide you with a beautiful wall!

Tips and Tricks for Painting your home from Village Professional Painters in Lewisville

Getting ready to paint your home? Good for you! Painting rooms in your home can create different “vibes” and emotions throughout your house. Light colors can create a more soothing and relaxing feeling, while darker colors can be conducive to getting some serious work done.

Before you begin to paint, it’s important that you jump the gun and knock out some easy things first. It’ll make your experience much easier and will actually improve the quality of experience that a new color of paint will deliver.

First off, clean the walls with a damp cloth to eliminate dust and any grime that could have accumulated over the years. If along the way you find some holes and imperfections on your wall, don’t hesitate to grab some spackle and lightly spackle as a filing.

If you’ve used a dark color paint beforehand, then primer is crucial to a good paint job. Primer can help hide wall imperfections and can be a huge help in masking dark colors.

Then, gather all of your materials. You’ll need good (not necessarily high) quality paint brushes, roller covers and extensions and some handy dandy painters tape. The reason better quality tools are needed is because you can visibly see the difference after the paint has set. If you decide to go cheaper on a brush, you’ll see visible “fuzzies” along the wall and inside the paint that can make things look messy and untrimmed.

What tools or tips have you used before painting your home or space that have made your experiences much easier? Use them or lose them - and learn as you go, it's your space!

Thinking of selling your Home? Call Village Professional Painters First!

The housing market in Texas is grade-A and peaking at a time when many are looking for an upgrade (or downgrade) in their future home. So if you’ve recently listed your house, you know that the first impression is one of the biggest pieces in selling and buying a home.

What does your home say potential buyers? What is your home’s first impression?

Fortunately, creating a positive first impression for your home doesn’t have to be difficult. A new paint color can be one of the fastest ways to change your home.

A new exterior paint job might be the biggest piece to curb appeal. Research suggests that nearly 40 percent of new home buyers preferred a house with a white exterior. However, white paint isn’t the same everywhere. Opt for a bright, clean and linen-shade white to truly catch the eyes of those passing by.

Once potential buyers have parked and decided to enter your home (because of the exterior paint job, right?), the shades of paint in those first rooms will be the extension of your curb appeal. Earth tones of brown, green, blues and orange can be inviting and welcoming. Imagine your favorite coffee shop; chances are it is very welcoming. Your home should be too.

While painting your home can be trendy and refreshing, not all paint jobs are the same. If you’re deciding to paint it yourself, here are a couple few tips from our expert staff at Village Professional Painters.

60-30-10
When choosing a color scheme for a room, you can use the 60-30-10 rule to create the right mix of colors for your scheme without overdoing it. 60 percent is the dominant shade, 30 percent the secondary and 10 percent is the accent shade.

Trendy?
Trendy colors aren’t always trendy, so beware of cute color combinations that are suddenly popular. Wall colors and secondary accents can be easily painted once again and changed to fit new schemes, but when buying accessory furniture to match a room, you might be out of luck.

If you really want a new look for any space in your home and just don't have the time to mess with all of it, call Village Professional Painters today.

Does your Home need a Tune- Up?

Does your home need a tune up? A quick paint job with a new color scheme can breathe new life into a home that might need one. But with so many options for colors, textures and designs, it can seem very overwhelming to choose. Here’s a quick brush up on some things to consider before painting your home.

1. Just a dab
A small dab of paint will help you to identify whether or not the paint reflects the color you chose. Some paints dry darker than they appear when wet, so a little dab will keep you from having to repaint your entire home… twice!

2. Lighting matters
Dark paints in a dark room… don’t do it. Natural daylight reveals the true, intended color of paints and can be a necessity. If you want a strong and boastful color, pair it next to some natural lighting to dim it’s tone and make it a complete accent.

3. Terminology
There’s a couple phrases that can help you when painting your home. Hue refers to the color and it’s value refers to how light or dark that hue is. Saturation is used to describe how dominant the hue is. For example, a saturated red hue is red while the less saturated red hue will be pink.

4. Color wheelin’
The color wheel is a great tool used to find complementary colors. They illustrated what color pairs will best match up with one another and can function beautifully when used in a room together.
